“Isabella!” Serena
called.
Isabella, just
about to sprinkle white pepper over her latest creation, stopped in mid-shake.
Serena’s voice still made her jump inside every time she heard it. “What’s the
matter?”
“Are you sure you
want to put pepper on the nutmeg carrot casserole?”
Isabella stared at
the container in her hand. She’d been sure it was their new nutmeg.
Daphne, who had
checked on the kitchen more than usual this morning, smiled at her. “So deep in
thought? Why don’t you put this into the refrigerator, and let’s go and have
some lunch. There are plenty of samples out there right now, so it can wait
until we get back.”
Isabella smiled
back weakly. Why is miss Hoity-Toity so nice all the sudden? But never mind,
she had a point. “Maybe you’re right. My mind should be on my work, but it isn’t.”
She pushed the casserole into the refrigerator. “Time for a break.”
“Great,” Serena
said, and together they went across the street to the small café where Isabella
had met Brett a few days ago.
